Name Inspiration
- Zarya - Russian/Romani
- registered as Zariia Gorgonii (as masculine name)
Given Name
- Zarya - plausible feminine Slavic given name using alternate Revised English transliteration system, sn Zaria (m) -- Zakharii Zaria. 1618. [Tup 158] Vars: Zara Owanowich. 1648. [Mor 88]. Wickenden 2nd edition.
- Documentation of feminine/masculine names sharing grammatically feminine endings (all per Wickenden): Belka (squirrel), Groza (terror), Kasha (porridge), Mira (peace/earth), Nedelia (week), etc.
- Should have said: Pattern of feminine personal names using unmodified grammatically feminine Russian nouns, bracketing examples x 6...
Notes:
Zaria is the name of the pagan Russian goddess of the dawn, depicted in Russian folklore as a beautiful maiden. More importantly to the heralds (since we can't register names that were only used by gods), it is documented as a man's (!) name in Wickenden as Zaria and Zara. So convincing the Heralds to register it as a woman's name might be tricky, despite the fact it is grammatically feminine and the name of a female goddess. But I have developed a couple strategies for this problem.
Interestingly, the word zaryanka (robin) is related to zarya according to Dal'... Wickenden documents Zaranko as a men's name (diminutive of Zaran)... I should be able to document a/ia switches, plus the well-established o/a switches...
Zara meaning zarya is attested in Sreznevskii to 1097. Zarya is attested (ibid) to 1073 and includes more general meaning - glow, light, etc, in addition to utrennaya zarya (and vechernaya zarya). No zaryanka, though. Not in Wickenden, either. :-(
Byname/Surname
Gorgoniia - expected feminine form of Russian saint's name Gorgonii, sn. Gorgonii (m) -- Gorgonii, martyr. 4th Century. from Wickenden.
Documentation of feminization pattern (all per Wickenden): Artemii -> Artemiia, Evgenii -> Evgeniia, Evsignii -> Evsigniia, etc.

Combination
Need to be consistent about Revised English vs Library of Congress transliterations systems. Either:
- Zarya Gorgoniya OR
- Zaria Gorgoniia
Double given name combining Slavic name (Zarya) with Christian name (Gorgoniya) attested in SENA Appendix A.
Gorgoniya, as a saints name, was a part of the Russian naming period throughout SCA period, so no temporal incompatibility issue with Zarya dated to grey period. Per precedent: "In the case of name elements in the Dictionary [Wickenden] derived from the names of saints and martyrs, we continue to apply the rule set out in the June 2013 Cover Letter. For names listed with only a very early date (3rd century, for example) and noted to be the name of a saint or martyr, the submitter can rely on the Saint's Name Allowance found in PN1B2d1 to register that element." July 2017 Cover Letter
Blazon Information
Armory: morning star (sun on a stick - as in the weapon! duh! aka "spiked mace") but also wanting to incorporate my house symbol which is a Gorgon head but possibly in profile,
- Dark color: black - I will probably sweat to death and it will be so worth it
- Light metal: yellow/gold - if we could make the mace in the metal so it stands out that would be awesome.
- Red accents? Happy to play with red, or blue in there somewhere!
Blazon Desired:Sable, a gorgon's head couped facing dexter Or and on a chief Or a morning star sable distilling gouttes de sange from snakes, tongue, neck and morning star."
- Above returned because red drops didn't have sufficient contrast with the field.
Options:
- Get rid of the drops
- Change the drops to white "gouttes d'eau"
- Change the drops to yellow "gouttes d'or"
