A History of the Dorchester Pope Family

A History of the Dorchester Pope Family, published 1888

p. 73 - notes the question of whether Thomas is the 2nd son, not the 1st son, of John of Squantum, aka John Jr. [aka naughty John] with older half-siblings being John of 1635 and Nathan of 1641, born of Jane.

p. 91 - The oldest son of "John Pope, jr., had but one son of whose marriage we have evidence... Married 1669-70 to Elizabeth dau. of Henry Merrifield, bapt. 16 April 1649.

"Deprived of his mother at an early age, and not properly "catechized" by his father, as seen in the demand of the Selectmen in 1675 (although he was 22 yo by then)... this boy had much to keep him back, little to develop his best qualities, it may be conjectured. When he was 24 yo, the selectmen were minded to admonish certain "young men not under the Government of famyles according as the law enjoins"; and though not called to the lecture-room for a warning, Thomas was "privately" cautioned that he must have a place as an obedient child under his father's roof, or find some other home... he found a bride in the daughter of the farmer who cultivated part of the Clapp lands."

They note that he signed a petition to King Charles II "on the threshold of majority" (1664). He was chosen as a fence-viewer about the time of his marriage.

In 1675, he was given permission to cut railes from the town lands, and in 1679 he was permitted to cut sufficient timber to build a 18 ft x 16 ft house.

He was needy enough to participate in the legacy of Jane Burges, receiving a share along with his father-in-law.

Several children had been born by this point, when their mother died, date unknown. He married Margaret Long 18 Nov 1881.

In 1683, he was engaged in settling his local debts in order to get permission to emigrate. He moved to the Connecticut (river?) valley and live for some years. Suffield records the death of a John Pope on 20 Aug 1683, presumably the first child by his 2nd wife. Mindwell, dau. was also born here in 1687. However, a year later they are in Springfield where Margaret's death was recorded for 28 Dec. 1688.

Then in Northampton, "Experience Pope died Sept. 20, 1689." Whether he then moved to Lancaster, where his brother John was, we don't know. But his youngest daughter, Alice, was living there years later, married to John Harris. But she was in Dorchester to join the church there on Jan. 17th 1696. Father Thomas was there also in 1698 when he got a "right" to land in Stoughton.

A Court Order in 1700 indicates that he was deceased, details unknown.

In 1739, "Thomas Pope of Haverhill yeoman" conveyed 1/4 part of the land laid out by Dorchester and Stoughton in "the right of his late Father Thomas Pope deceased"... and 1/12th of the land that was laid out to "Henry Merrifield deceased (grandfather by the Mother's side unto the said Thomas Pope)."

That same year, John Harris of Lancaster... and "Alice his wife (who is daughter to Elizabeth deceased and grandaughter to Henry Merrifield...)" sold her 1/12th part of the Merrifield property.
